_CHARACTER'S (ACTUAL) AGE: Unknown, presumably centuries.
--Koishi Komeiji is the younger sister of Satori, both members of a spiritual race known as the Satori. Satori herself has ruled in the underworld region of 'Former Hell' from the Earth, presumably from the time of its separation from hell and the establishment of the Hakurei border in 1884. While Komeiji may be younger than Satori, she is canonically familiar with humanity and other youkai's reactions to the Satori race's natural telepathic abilities and chooses to close her 'Satori Eye' because of it. This familiarity includes awareness of the results of her use on other species, implying heavily that both girls were alive at the time of the Hakurei Border's establishment in 1884.
It is safe to assume that Koishi is over a century old. How old she is exactly, it is unlikely that even she remembers at this point, and the few scholars intimately aware of Satori's sister are not anymore likely to recall.
_CHARACTER'S (APPARENT) AGE: Politely ignoring ZUN's pronounced tendency to display all female characters using 'loli' styles of art, Komeiji appears to have a fairly generic and youthful appearance in line with that of the majority of youkai in the cast. It is safe to assume that she appears in the upper teens, eternally youthful, at around 17-19.
_CHARACTER'S HAIR COLOR: Pale Sea Green. Depending upon the way that the light catches her (or more accurately: Which game she's displayed in, or what artist is drawing her at the time in fanart), her hair may appear pale to the point of almost being white, or a deeper sea green. Her base color, however, is sea-green.

One of the Satori race (A race Touhou derives from ancient folklore for mountain spirits), Koishi is the sister of Satori Komeiji. As a Satori, she was born with a third eye floating in front of her body, connected to her through blue tendrils, one capable of reading the minds of other. The Satori were universally feared by youkai, oni and humans alike because of their ability to read minds, seen as incredibly dangerous and subjects of fear, hatred and scorn. While Satori herself chose to wall herself off within the Palace of Earth Spirits and rule over the Former Hell that surrounded it, living along with many youkai in relative isolation, Koishi sought another route to make peace with others' attitudes towards her people.
She took a radical action, sealing her third eye permanently. The act locked off her ability to read minds forever, but in the process also sealed her conscious mind from herself. Now operating subconsciously, she was neither feared, nor hated, nor was she loved or cared for by any but a very few individuals like Satori. People could barely remember that she existed after she left their company, and usually only noticed her when she acted towards them, came into their field of vision or made a conscious effort to be remembered by them. Her emotions were muted to a drastic degree, and her desires lost in favor of more instinctual whims. With time, she developed the ability to speak, to communicate, to interact on a meaningful level through her subconscious mind, but felt a profound disconnect with other people.
For the time after this, until “Season 128” (roughly 2013), Koishi's life was comprised with a regular and constant stream of unpredictable behavior. Relying upon her subconscious to make her decisions, even Koishi did not know for certain what her actions would be at any one time. She rode upon the wave of it, living in her sister's mansion, visiting and caring for her beloved sister when the mood struck, wandering the city or popping over to Earth whenever the mood struck. The increasingly scientific and skeptical ways of the world above bore her no risk because its people almost never even noticed that she was there, freely able to travel where she pleased. It was an existence without desire, one filled with whims and little permanence, and though she was lonely at times, she was also happy and at peace with herself.
In Season 128 of the the Gensokyo Season, she came across the Mask of Hope, a powerful possession of Hata no Kokoro, a Menreiki spirit who placed her emotions within her masks. While the mask was in her possession, despite Koishi's subconscious mental processes, she acquired the emotion of hope and its related sensations, beginning to feel it towards almost all of her actions. It reminded her of the urge that she had to be remembered and spend time in the company of others, and she took on a very possessive attitude towards it, not even realizing its source or the fact that it made her far less invisible than she had once been, not to mention a target of Hata no Kokoro's wrath as she sought out the mask.
_ABILITIES:
-Subconscious Thought Process and Protection: Koishi does not think or act consciously, and her conscious mind is sealed, locked and inactive. This has sealed away the Satori racial ability to read minds, making it impossible for her to read other's thoughts, and has severely hampered any level of empathy that she has towards others. Her actions are difficult, if not impossible to predict, seemingly haphazard while at the same time being very dangerous in combat. Her mind is nearly impossible to read, as her conscious mind is sealed even from herself, and her subconscious is both protected by this barrier and also inconsistent enough to be very hard to interpret.
Even fellow mind-reading Satori and most supernatural creatures are affected by this power. It causes it to be hard to remember or feel strongly about Koishi. Even when she is present in front of someone, Koishi must exert a very small amount of personal effort to allow most to remember her. Very young children are immune to this effect, and sometimes remember her as an imaginary friend until they grow up and forget her again. This means that, aside from very young children, child-like or instinctual minds, or particularly strong-willed people, it is difficult for people to remember Koishi between conversations (For example, both Marisa and Reimu, two of the most powerful magicians in the Touhou universe, both do not remember who Koishi is when they encounter her at the start of Hopeless Masquerade, despite the fact that she is literally the last boss of the game both are in previously, not more than a few years prior, and the sister of a person who makes both very nervous.).
Presumably, because her power operates on the human mind, it is not actual invisibility. It does not impact technological recording, and because it requires a certain subconscious manipulation by her, recorded information about Koishi can result in conflicting information that relates pieces of information about her that may be remembered by others.
The Mask of Hope – So long as the Mask of Hope is in her possession, her Subconscious control of herself is not 100% secure. She has begun to subconsciously experience the emotion of Hope and related emotions. As she experiences and builds emotions in others, these impressions are just barely starting to cause people to recall her. It is a slow process, and characters still frequently forget details about her.
Subconscious Manipulation – Through manipulation of the subconscious, she is capable of causing others to experience and see what she desires, usually seeing the weaknesses in their own hearts of which they are not consciously aware. Most of her magic and spell cards come from this ability.
_PERSONALITY:
Koishi Komeiji's personality can be difficult to pin down on most occasions. The main reason for this is that she acts based upon her subconscious mind, her instincts. Conscious thought, planning, detailed contemplation and highly complicated and nuanced emotions are things that one does not encounter in her personality. She is instinctual, but has also lived as an instinctual being for so long that she displays an ability to communicate, operate and care for herself and those that interest her beyond the moment. This level of planning, however, should not be construed as being inherently different than a bird instinctually bringing twigs to build its nest. It does not require conscious thought, and is pre-programmed in knowledge and understanding from her past life, before having sealed her third eye.
The sealing of the third, 'Satori Eye' is the centerpiece of what makes Koishi the person that she is today. For reasons even she does not remember in detail, she sealed away both her conscious mind and the ability of the Satori to read other's minds. All that she says on this subject is to tell Reimu once that reading minds causes only trouble, bringing with it depression, potentially explaining in part the cynicism of her beloved sister, Satori Komeiji.
Koishi is a creature of instinct and urges. She does not have, or is thought not to have desire naturally inside of her, and instead has whims or reactions. When she sees something that she might want, she seeks to acquire it, but her urge does not transcend the experience and fades easily, desire not holding sway in her heart. Normally, she has no strong emotions at any time, being generally friendly, curious and pleasant to speak to, but taking little stock in the situation that she is involved in. While, on the surface, this makes her seem to be a perpetually smiling and kind-hearted person, she is still a youkai, a spiritual and predatory being who may have instinctual urges that can be quite violent and dangerous towards others, if she feels threatened or happens to take on a violent instinct out of the blue. More than this, she has next to no sense of empathy towards other. She can understand the stated 'why' of another's behavior, but just as she is rarely hated, rarely loved, rarely cared about, she does not always understand other's loves, fears or emotions, save at the subconscious levels, and even then she cannot simply read their subconscious minds, meaning that she only understands them as they are displayed and released in her presence visibly.
The only exception to this is a more recent development: Hope. Accidentally, she encountered the Mask of Hope, a possession of Hata no Kokoro, which carried within it the concentrated essence of the emotion of hope. Kokoro warned against using only this one mask when trying (post canon point) to re-acquire it that it could create emotional instability, though Koishi appears protected from this risk by her relative lack of emotions in general. She has begun experiencing hope for the first time since her closing of the Satori Eye, and found herself somewhat addicted to the experience. It has brought an increased positive element to her bearing, one that looks towards the potential with, for lack of a better word, hope. It has not caused much more than a slight yearning in her to awaken further, experiencing the loneliness of her life as a closed-eye Satori and a desire to be remembered by others. She has clearly (as is seen post-canon point in her interactions in Hopeless Masquerade) forgotten how much she missed the company of others in an ongoing fashion, or to be remembered by them. Because of this, she hopes for the experience to continue and is developing the first hints of an addiction to being noticed and the possession of her Mask.
All of this related to the Mask is at the earliest stages. Her powers still overwhelm most interactions, but with every passing person who does not forget her, her hope blossoms and she takes on a greater desire to be remembered and above all to be noticed by others. It has built what could be described as a slightly exhibitionist behavior, one seen in the conflicts of Hopeless Masquerade.
_ITEMS: She is dressed in a simple green skirt, tan button down jacket, boots and a dark, low-brimmed hat. She has in her possession the “Mask of Hope” of Hata no Kokoro, an ivory mask that looks like the face of a child or the spiritual figure Jizo. This mask does not appear physically on her person, presumably because she does not will for it to be seen by others. It is the source of the strong emotion of hope in herself.
